What is GILT?
The GILT industry, which is essential to the cross-regional promotion of business activities, encompasses globalisation, internationalisation, localisation, and translation—the four key aspects of adapting brands, products, and services for different markets across languages and cultures. We are witnessing its growing role in the post-pandemic era, when COVID-19 and its relevant anti-pandemic measures, coupled with the rapid development of information technology driven by recent advances in artificial intelligence, have changed the way we work and communicate. Such changes have, in turn, prompted companies to rethink their GILT strategies and efforts to expand across regions in response to the new normal.
GILT is rooted in language services and translation studies. The definition of Globalisation includes business decisions and activities aimed at making organisations, products and services global and/or multilingual, such as adopting international marketing strategies, restructuring operating units, and managing global supply chains. Internationalisation involves designing and developing products and services in a manner that facilitates adaptation to different markets. Localisation is the process of adapting products and services to specific markets, including translation for market differences. Translation is the conversion of text from the source language into the target language.
Our Centre: GILTRC
With the support of experts from the five schools of HSUHK, the research team has proposed the establishment of the GILT Research Centre, the first of its kind in Hong Kong, with funding support of HK$4.04 million from the Institutional Development Fund of the Research Grants Council of the HKSAR Government. By leveraging the cross-disciplinary expertise of HSUHK’s five schools, the Centre aims to foster academic exploration of multilingual communication and language services, as well as investigating the multifaceted aspects of GILT. The initiative aims to consider how professionals in sectors related to cross-lingual and cross-regional promotion can contribute to addressing challenges and seizing opportunities in an ever-changing, post-pandemic world.
Our Objectives
Key Initiatives
The success of GILT projects relies on input from diverse fields of study, encompassing not only translation studies, but also business, communication, design, information technology, intercultural studies, among others. To this end, the Centre has two primary directions for promoting the study of GILT, which are developing the “GILT Research Hub” and conducting research projects. The “GILT Research Hub” is an online platform which offers valuable information for researchers and contributes to the enhancement of the University’s research infrastructure for GILT exploration. The Hub features a wide range of research-related resources, including bilingual datasets, industry news, AI models, and more, to keep users abreast of the latest developments in the research and professional communities.
